I'm taken quite by surprise at the fact that summer is almost over. It seems like a very short summer. There are a few reasons for this. Primarily I think it's because we've had such a cool summer. We have not yet hit 100 degrees. We had a few hot days but nothing dramatic. This whole week has been in the low 80's. Unheard of for STL in August. The cool weather has me thinking of fall. I actually went downstairs and started washing the pile of blankets that have been sitting there for awhile. I'm obsessed with making sure our sheets and blankets are all ready to go for winter. I'm fall cleaning (like spring cleaning only more important since we're cooped up indoors). The feeling of summer-ending is exacerbated by the fact that we're doing "real school" this year. We have our back to school/welcome picnic this Friday. School supplies are lined up and ready to go. I go back on the 25th, less than 2 weeks. Yikes!
It's a very good thing I'm not the person running 3 Rivers Community Farm. Why, you ask? Well, because if I was one of 2 things would be happening. Either: 1. I would get fat and jolly in the watermelon patch, no weeding or hoeing or any other farm work would ever be accomplished. They would have to roll me home each night. Or 2. The entire farm share would be watermelons. The season would be 2 months long and nothing but watermelon. No lettuce, no peppers, no tomatoes. You've not eaten watermelon until you've eaten it fresh from the field. No graininess, no granular bits, just sweet and juicy and flavorful. Amazing, simply amazing.
Ok, that and these little orange cherry tomatoes. I'd get roly-poly on those too. Yum.
Oh, and finally a shout out to my friend Heather! Missed you friend!
