So I really love the idea of homeschooling. I really REALLY love the idea of homeschooling. My oldest is 6 and a half, seems to be doing well, learning to read, figuring out time, writes a ton, picking up on basic math, understanding basic science, etc... . Neall though (Mr. "I knew how to read at the age of 4) has me wondering if I'm doing the right thing. I'm an unschooler at heart. I love seeing the joy of discovery when the kids take on new knowledge without meaning to. I love the look of satisfaction and pride when something clicks in their brain. My oldest is also an artist in a true sense of the word. She'd go through a sketch book every day if I'd let her. I, however, am NOT an artist. I'm worried that her drive and skill will be squashed or go un-tapped with my lack of experience in the art world and the art frame of mind. At the same time, I don't want to stifle her own unique style by trying to funnel her into art training and structure. So, we have 2 issues with her. I can't keep her artistically busy and my husband thinks she's not getting enough in the realm of classical education.
A good friend has discovered and been accepted to a private school. It has a lot going for it. It's near us. This is more of a plus than you would think. Seems like most everything worth paying attention to around here is WAAAAAYYYYY up north, in St. Charles, or in West County. 1 point for SS. The philosophy looks incredibly good on paper. If I had to write up a philosophy for our homeschool it would be strikingly similar. Another point for SS. This school is small and sort of a work in progress. This has good and bad points. Because it's new-ish and growing there is room for change. Change and adaptability are good. Because it's new-ish and growing there is room for change. Change can be not-so-good depending on what changes and how. So, point for adaptability, but minus a point for possible negative changes. (By negative I mean negative for our situation, not necessarily negative overall). This school offers enrichment activities such as violin, foreign language, lots of art opportunities. Point, point, point. This school costs money. It doesn't cost a LOT of money because they have a sliding scale but right now the fact that I'd have to drive her there which costs money for gas is too much, kwim? It's difficult for me to truly consider paying money for school when we haven't gotten the mortgage payment made for May, much less June, lol. They offer a sliding scale, as well as the opportunity to work for tuition. It's possible this could work for us. I'm pursuing a degree in ECE after all. Or am I?
See, this is the time in my life where I desperately wish for a vacation. Everything is in limbo because dh isn't working yet and until he is I have no idea how much money or time I have to dedicate to each of the many things that have to do with family life. I have so many ideas, plans, wants, needs, desires, wishes that I don't know where to go first. For today, I just need to get my house clean :P.
